Kabras Oust Menengai Oilers to Reclaim Dala Sevens Title

Kabras Sugar staged a superb second-half comeback to beat Menengai Oilers 19-5 and win the Dala Sevens title on Sunday, reclaiming the top spot in the SportPesa National Sevens Circuit standings.

Trailing 5-0 at halftime, the Sugar Millers responded with three unanswered tries to secure their first title of the 2026 campaign and erase the disappointment of losing last year’s Dala Sevens final.

Derrick Ashihundu ignited the comeback with Kabras’ opening try before youngster Rayvon Ambale, who was later named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player, crossed the line and converted his own try to give his side the lead. Fredrick Wangila wrapped up the victory with the third try, with Michael Lukusi adding the extras.

The victory saw Kabras move to the summit of the overall circuit standings after two rounds.

“We are very happy to have won here in Kisumu. We fell short in Nakuru after losing the final, but we knew we had what it takes to bounce back. We are delighted with this win,” said Kabras captain Mathias Osimbo.

The result was a major turnaround for Kabras, who had finished runners-up to KCB in last year’s Dala Sevens.

Harlequins End KCB’s Title Defence

Defending circuit champions KCB endured a difficult outing as their hopes of retaining the Dala Sevens title were ended by Kenya Harlequins in the quarter-finals.

The Bankers, who had swept to victory in the season-opening Prinsloo Sevens in Nakuru, looked far from their best in Kisumu. A 19-19 draw against MMUST in the pool stages exposed their vulnerability before Harlequins completed the upset to knock them out.

KCB recovered to finish fifth after beating Strathmore Leos 24-17.

Harlequins also fell short of a podium finish after losing 27-22 to Mwamba in a thrilling third-place playoff that was decided in extra time. Mwamba captain Shaquel Bosire scored the winning try to seal third place.

Mwamba Ladies Retain Title

Mwamba Ladies successfully defended their Dala Sevens crown after edging Kenya Harlequins 10-7 in the Division One women’s final.

A late try secured back-to-back titles for Mwamba and earned the team the KSh100,000 winners’ prize.

In the Division Two final, Catholic Monks defeated Stallions 20-14 to secure promotion to Division One. The champions received KSh70,000, while Stallions took home KSh30,000 as runners-up.

SportPesa Head of Public Relations Willis Ojwang hailed the quality and competitiveness of the tournament, saying the performances of teams such as Harlequins and MMUST showed the gap between the traditional powerhouses and emerging sides was narrowing.

The National Sevens Circuit resumes on August 15 and 16 with the Kabeberi Memorial Sevens at Impala Club in Nairobi.
