The East African Science and Technology Commission, in collaboration with the Inter-University Council for East Africa, will co-host the 4th East African Community Regional Science, Technology and Innovation Conference from 30 March to 1 April 2026 at the Kigali Convention Centre.
Under the theme “Harnessing Artificial Intelligence for a Resilient, Inclusive, and Innovative East Africa,” the conference comes at a pivotal point in the region’s technological development. It will bring together leading thinkers, innovators, and policymakers to drive coordinated and practical action on artificial intelligence.
The event will be officially opened by Paula Ingabire. Expected attendees include senior EAC officials, institutional heads, and development partners.
Describing the conference as a call to action, Sylvance Okoth said the region’s approach to artificial intelligence will shape its long-term resilience and prosperity.
Held every two years by EASTECO and IUCEA, the STI Conference has become a key regional platform for scientific dialogue, collaboration, and policy development. This fourth edition is the first to centre on artificial intelligence, recognising its growing role in advancing the goals of the EAC’s 7th Development Strategy.
Idris Rai noted that universities and research institutions have a critical role in shaping an inclusive, evidence-based AI future and strengthening higher education’s contribution to sustainable growth.
The conference will convene high-level delegations from all eight EAC Partner States, including government officials, researchers, private sector leaders, and civil society representatives. It aims to build partnerships, align regional priorities, and promote responsible AI adoption for sustainable development.
The three-day programme will feature plenary sessions, paper presentations, ministerial dialogues, innovation showcases for youth and women, side events, and an exhibition, with more than 680 in-person delegates expected alongside virtual participants.
