Gunners head to Villa Park seeking crucial points as Arteta targets historic back-to-back titles
Arsenal’s quest to become the first club in the Premier League era to successfully defend the title faces another stern test when they travel to Aston Villa on Monday night.
The Gunners arrive at Villa Park as reigning champions, but history suggests they cannot afford to take Unai Emery’s side lightly.
Arsenal have won 87 of the 203 meetings between the two clubs, compared with 71 victories for Villa, while 45 encounters have ended in draws.
The two sides shared home victories last season. Villa won 2-1 in December 2025 before Arsenal responded with a commanding 4-1 victory in the return fixture.
For Mikel Arteta, consistency will be critical as Arsenal attempt to retain their crown and make club history.
“We know that it is going to demand something special, and we are going to go for it. We know what it’s going to take, we know the difficulty of the task. That’s why we’ve never done it at the club, to win it again,” Arteta said.
Villa, however, have their own ambitions.
Since taking charge, Emery has transformed the club into a side capable of competing with England’s established elite. The former Arsenal manager admits Villa still lack the financial strength of the biggest clubs but believes they are increasingly capable of challenging them.
“If we compare ourselves to other clubs like Man City, Chelsea, Manchester United, Arsenal and Liverpool, we are competing with them. We don’t have their power yet,” Emery said.
Emery vs Arteta: Tactical Battle
The meeting will also pit two tactically astute Spanish managers against each other.
Emery is expected to demand aggressive pressing and rapid transitions, with Villa looking to exploit any space behind Arsenal’s defensive line.
Arteta, meanwhile, will seek to dominate possession and territory, using Arsenal’s structured build-up play and wide overloads to stretch Villa’s defensive shape.
The midfield battle could prove decisive, with Arsenal looking to control the tempo while Villa attempt to disrupt their rhythm and turn turnovers into quick attacks.
Players to Watch
Ollie Watkins – Aston Villa
Watkins remains one of Villa’s biggest attacking threats. His pace, movement and ability to run behind defenders could cause problems for Arsenal, particularly during transitions.
His pressing from the front and ability to occupy central defenders will also be crucial to Villa’s attacking strategy.
Kai Havertz – Arsenal
Havertz gives Arsenal versatility in attack, with his movement allowing him to operate between central and wide areas.
His aerial ability, link-up play and late runs into the box could prove decisive against Villa’s defence.
