Kenya has been selected to host the 2026 FIFA Women’s Series matches, marking a historic milestone as the country stages a global football event for the first time.
Addressing the press on Tuesday, Cabinet Secretary for Youth Affairs, Creative Economy and Sports Salim Mvurya said the selection signals growing international confidence in Kenya’s ability to organise and deliver world-class sporting events.
Mvurya said the tournament will provide a platform to showcase emerging talent in women’s football while elevating Kenya’s profile on the global stage. He added that Kenya’s inclusion among 48 teams in the FIFA International Friendly Series will strengthen the country’s football ecosystem through increased international exposure and competitiveness.
The Cabinet Secretary pointed to Kenya’s strong track record in hosting major sporting events, including the African Nations Championship, the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series, the Magical Kenya Open and the WRC Safari Rally.
He noted that the government has continued to invest in modern sports infrastructure, including the upgrading of Nyayo and Kasarani stadiums, as well as the construction of the Raila Odinga International Stadium at the Talanta Sports Complex.
Mvurya also highlighted ongoing reforms aimed at strengthening governance in the sports sector, including the proposed Sports Bill 2026 and a new stadium management framework designed to boost accountability and attract global partnerships.
He said the tournament will serve as a key test event ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations 2027, which Kenya will co-host with Uganda and Tanzania.
The Cabinet Secretary called on Kenyans to turn out in large numbers to support the Harambee Starlets, urging unity as the country prepares to welcome international teams and fans.
“This is an opportunity to showcase not only our sporting excellence but also our hospitality and national spirit,” he said.
The matches will take place on April 11 and 15, 2026 at Nyayo National Stadium in Nairobi, bringing together India, Australia and Malawi. Kenya will be represented by the national women’s team, Harambee Starlets.
