The Konza Technopolis Development Authority (KoTDA) has begun electricity distribution within Konza Technopolis through its own smart power distribution network, marking a major milestone in strengthening reliable, future ready infrastructure at Kenya’s flagship smart city.
The new distribution capability allows Konza Technopolis to manage and distribute electricity internally across Phase One of the development, improving reliability, operational efficiency, and service readiness for investors, institutions, businesses, and residential developments within Africa’s Silicon Savannah.
The milestone is being delivered through the deployment of Konza Smart Energy, the city’s intelligent energy platform designed to power next generation digital infrastructure, innovation ecosystems, and industrial development.
Konza Smart Energy has been designed as an intelligent and resilient system forming a core component of the city’s smart infrastructure architecture. It integrates advanced monitoring, automation, and redundancy mechanisms to ensure a stable and uninterrupted power supply for high demand digital and industrial activities.
Globally, leading smart cities operate on power reliability benchmarks exceeding 99.99 percent uptime, with minimal outage durations measured through internationally recognized indices such as the System Average Interruption Duration Index (SAIDI) and the System Average Interruption Frequency Index (SAIFI). Konza’s new distribution architecture has been designed to align with these high availability standards, positioning the city to support the Tier III Konza National Data Centre, advanced research institutions, precision manufacturing, and digital enterprises that depend on uninterrupted power.
At the center of the network is Distribution Substation 2 (DS02), which receives electricity from the national grid at 66kV and steps it down to 11kV for citywide distribution. The system is supported by a 2N+1 transformer configuration, ensuring redundancy and resilience consistent with global smart infrastructure best practices.
Electricity is delivered through more than 47 kilometres of underground 11kV cabling configured in a ring network, allowing rerouting in the event of faults and minimizing service interruptions. A total of 54 strategically located cabin substations step down supply to low voltage, enabling efficient service to parcels, municipal facilities, and developments across Phase One.

The distribution system integrates advanced protection, monitoring, and control mechanisms including gas insulated switchgear and smart automation features aligned with Konza’s Smart City framework.
Speaking on the milestone, Konza Technopolis Chief Executive Officer John Paul Okwiri said the rollout of Konza Smart Energy marks a significant step in advancing the smart infrastructure of the city.
He noted that following the official launch of Phase One infrastructure in October 2025, the achievement demonstrates steady progress toward building a resilient and future ready city powered by reliable and intelligent energy systems to support Kenya’s growing digital economy.
Power reliability remains a critical driver of economic growth. As Kenya advances its Digital Superhighway agenda and seeks to expand value added manufacturing, data hosting, and technology driven enterprises, dependable electricity infrastructure continues to play a foundational role.
By strengthening internal power distribution through Konza Smart Energy, Konza Technopolis supports Kenya’s ambition to grow its knowledge economy, enhance industrial productivity, and attract global investment.
The development also supports the expanding ecosystem of universities, research institutions, technology companies, housing developments, and export oriented industries operating within the Special Economic Zone.
As Kenya accelerates its transition toward a knowledge based economy, Konza Technopolis continues to deliver integrated infrastructure designed for scale, sustainability, resilience, and long term economic impact, ensuring that Africa’s Silicon Savannah competes confidently on the global stage.
