AMREF Flying Doctors has led a large scale Corporate Social Responsibility initiative in Mwihoko, bringing together national and county leaders, community members and more than 25 partner organisations to deliver health services, education support and environmental conservation activities at Mutuya Comprehensive School.

The Mwihoko Community CSR Day directly benefited the wider community, with over 2,000 residents receiving free health screenings and support services during the one day medical outreach programme.

The initiative was organised in recognition of the solidarity, compassion and resilience demonstrated by the Mwihoko community following the tragic aircraft accident of 7 August 2025. AMREF Flying Doctors said the outreach reflects its continued long term commitment to community recovery and development beyond moments of crisis.

The event drew participation from the Member of Parliament for Ruiru Constituency, the Member of County Assembly for Mwihoko Ward, members of the AMREF Flying Doctors Board of Directors, the Amref Health Africa Group leadership team, school administrators, partners and community representatives.

Speaking during the event, Major Kefa Kihara Retired said the initiative was shaped through consultations with local leaders and focused on practical and sustainable community needs.

“This engagement is not simply a CSR activity. It is a continuation of a shared journey with the Mwihoko community. We are translating compassion and solidarity into meaningful and lasting action centred on health, education, dignity and opportunity,” he said.

Major Kihara paid tribute to the lives lost in the August 2025 accident, including community members Yvonne Nasimiyu, a pupil at Mutuya Comprehensive School, and James Gitau, as well as AMREF Flying Doctors crew members Captain Muthuka Munuve, Captain Brian Kimani, Dr Charles Njoroge and Nurse Jane Omusula. He noted that their legacy of service continues to guide the organisation’s mission.

As part of the CSR initiative, AMREF Flying Doctors announced plans to construct a new classroom block at Mutuya Comprehensive School with support from partners. The facility is expected to expand learning space, ease congestion and create a safer environment for students.

Other activities carried out during the CSR Day included a comprehensive medical outreach camp offering health screenings for children and adults, psychosocial support services for affected families and vulnerable residents, and distribution of stationery, food and clothing donations contributed by staff and partners. Participants also planted 150 trees within the school compound to promote environmental conservation.

Remarks delivered on behalf of Amref Health Africa Group leadership underscored the importance of sustained community partnerships beyond periods of tragedy.

Jennifer Peng, Group Chief Finance Officer, speaking on behalf of the Group Chief Executive Officer, reaffirmed Amref’s commitment to rebuilding alongside communities.

“Our commitment is to walk with communities beyond moments of tragedy and toward long term resilience and opportunity. What we are building here today in health, education and environment reflects our belief that lasting change happens when institutions and communities work side by side,” she said.

She added that strong schools, accessible health services and community support systems form the foundation of resilient and healthy societies.

The Mwihoko CSR Day was made possible through collaboration with 27 partner organisations across aviation, healthcare, finance, logistics and community services. Supporting partners included Ecobank Kenya, 748 Air Services, AfricAir, Sedgwick Insurance, Aga Khan Hospital, Sense of Africa, Jimcab, Aim Air, Safarilink Aviation, Hemingways Travel, Nairobi Hospital, Amref Sacco among others.

According to organisers, the outreach reached over 2,000 community members, marked a commitment to a new classroom block, saw 150 trees planted and facilitated the distribution of essential supplies, reinforcing a shared vision of long term community wellbeing and resilience.
