NCCK Tells Voters to Judge Leaders by Track Record, Not Promises

The National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK) has called on Kenyans to make informed choices in the lead-up to the 2027 General Election, warning that the country is facing a deep moral, governance and socio-economic crisis driven by corruption, impunity and weak leadership.

Addressing the press after a two-day Executive Committee meeting in Limuru, NCCK Chairman Rev. Elias Agola and General Secretary Canon Chris Kinyanjui said Kenya continues to grapple with poor governance, abuse of human rights, politicized institutions and premature election campaigns, all of which have undermined public confidence in leadership.

The church leaders urged citizens to evaluate political leaders based on their track record rather than campaign promises, saying the choice of leaders begins long before election day. They encouraged voters to judge leaders by the quality of their service and integrity.

NCCK also welcomed the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission’s release of the 2027 election calendar, describing it as an important milestone in preparations for the polls. However, the council challenged the electoral body to rebuild public confidence, noting that recent opinion surveys indicate low levels of trust in its ability to conduct free, fair and credible elections.

The church leaders urged the commission to uphold transparency and accountability, saying it carries the constitutional responsibility of safeguarding the democratic rights of millions of Kenyans.

On the economy, NCCK expressed concern over the rising cost of living, saying many families are struggling under the weight of over-taxation, unemployment and declining purchasing power. The council argued that the difficult economic conditions have left many citizens vulnerable to political manipulation through vote-buying.

The church appealed to Kenyans not to trade their votes for short-term incentives, emphasizing that the right to vote is a valuable democratic responsibility that should not be exchanged for temporary benefits.

NCCK called on all stakeholders, including citizens, political leaders and institutions, to uphold integrity, accountability and peaceful participation as the country prepares for the 2027 General Election.
