The Government has reached a major milestone in the modernization of Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) following the signing of an engineering consultancy contract for the design review, project management, contract administration and construction supervision of the airport’s planned redevelopment.
The agreement marks the beginning of a critical phase in the transformation of Kenya’s main aviation gateway and was witnessed by the Cabinet Secretary for Roads and Transport, Davis Chirchir.
Under the contract, Dar Al-Handasah Consultants has been appointed to provide comprehensive engineering consultancy services covering design review, project management, contract administration and construction supervision for the project’s three key components. The firm will also support the delivery of world-class airport infrastructure aimed at improving operational efficiency, safety, passenger experience, capacity and long-term sustainability.
The contract was signed by Principal Secretary for Aviation and Aerospace Development Teresia Mbaika on behalf of the Ministry of Roads and Transport and by Dar Al-Handasah Senior Partner George Fares. The signing ceremony was attended by senior officials from the State Department for Aviation and Aerospace Development and Dar Al-Handasah Consultants.
Speaking during the ceremony, Cabinet Secretary Chirchir emphasized the Government’s commitment to quality and accountability.
“We expect the highest level of standards and value for money in this project,” he said.
Principal Secretary Mbaika said the modernization project is expected to deliver significant economic benefits.
“We are keen to deliver to Kenyans an asset that will be a catalyst to the economy,” she said, noting that the upgraded airport will support growth in tourism, trade and other key sectors.
The Government said the project underscores its commitment to developing modern aviation infrastructure that will position JKIA as Africa’s leading aviation gateway and a regional air cargo hub. The modernization is also expected to enhance Kenya’s competitiveness, facilitate trade and tourism, and drive sustainable economic growth.
